Medicare vs. Medicaid

Medicare is federal health insurance for people 65+ and certain disabilities. Medicaid (Turquoise Care in NM) is income-based assistance. Over 100,000 New Mexicans qualify for both as 'dual-eligible' beneficiaries.

Medicare and Medicaid are both government health insurance programs, but they serve different populations and are funded differently. Many New Mexicans are confused about the distinction, and some may qualify for both programs simultaneously.

Dual Eligibility in New Mexico

Some New Mexicans qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid, known as "dual eligibles." If you qualify for both, Medicaid may help pay your Medicare premiums, deductibles, and copayments. New Mexico's Turquoise Care program administers Medicaid through managed care organizations (MCOs).

Dual-eligible beneficiaries may also qualify for Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans (D-SNPs), which are Medicare Advantage plans designed specifically for people with both Medicare and Medicaid.
