Veterans & Military

Military retirees in New Mexico must enroll in Medicare Parts A and B to continue TRICARE benefits. Once enrolled, TRICARE For Life acts as a Medigap-like supplement covering most remaining costs.

New Mexico has a proud military heritage with multiple active installations and a large veteran population. Understanding how Medicare works alongside military healthcare benefits—including TRICARE, VA health care, and TRICARE For Life—is essential for service members, retirees, and their families.

Military and Defense Sites in New Mexico

  • Kirtland Air Force Base — Albuquerque (Bernalillo County)
  • Holloman Air Force Base — Alamogordo (Otero County)
  • Cannon Air Force Base — Clovis (Curry County)
  • White Sands Missile Range — Dona Ana/Otero Counties
  • Los Alamos National Laboratory — Los Alamos County (a DOE/NNSA national laboratory, not a military base)
  • Sandia National Laboratories — Albuquerque (a DOE/NNSA national laboratory on Kirtland AFB)

Medicare and TRICARE

If you are a military retiree turning 65, you must enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B to continue receiving TRICARE benefits. Once you have both Medicare Parts A and B, you become eligible for TRICARE For Life (TFL), which acts as a supplement to Medicare.

TRICARE For Life (TFL)

  • Acts as a Medigap-like supplement—Medicare pays first, TFL covers most remaining costs
  • No monthly premium for TFL (beyond your Part B premium)
  • Includes pharmacy coverage through TRICARE
  • Available worldwide, including all New Mexico communities
  • You do not need a separate Medigap policy or Medicare Advantage plan with TFL

Critical: If you are a military retiree and do not enroll in Medicare Part B when first eligible, you will lose TRICARE benefits. TRICARE will not pay for services that Medicare would have covered. Enroll in Parts A and B during your Initial Enrollment Period around age 65.

Medicare and VA Health Care

You can have both Medicare and VA health care. They work independently:

  • VA covers: Care at VA facilities for service-connected and eligible conditions
  • Medicare covers: Care at any Medicare-accepting provider or facility
  • VA cannot bill Medicare, and Medicare cannot pay for care received at VA facilities
  • Having both gives you maximum flexibility—choose VA or civilian providers based on your needs

New Mexico VA Medical Center is located in Albuquerque, with community-based outpatient clinics across the state.
