Medicare Basics

Medicare has four parts: Part A (hospital, $1,736 deductible in 2026), Part B (medical, $202.90/month premium), Part C (Medicare Advantage), and Part D (prescription drugs, $2,100 annual out-of-pocket cap in 2026).

Medicare is the federal health insurance program that serves more than 65 million Americans, including over 400,000 New Mexicans. If you are turning 65, have certain disabilities, or have been diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), you may be eligible for Medicare coverage.

Understanding how the different parts of Medicare work together is essential to choosing the right coverage for your needs and budget.

The Four Parts of Medicare

Part A: Hospital Insurance

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health services. Most people do not pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 40 quarters (10 years). The 2026 inpatient deductible is $1,736.

Part B: Medical Insurance

Covers doctor office visits, outpatient care, preventive services, lab tests, durable medical equipment, mental health services, and ambulance transportation. The standard 2026 premium is $202.90/month with a $283 annual deductible.

Part C: Medicare Advantage

Private health plans approved by Medicare that combine Part A and Part B coverage, often with Part D drug coverage and extra benefits like dental, vision, and hearing. Plan availability varies by county in New Mexico.

Covers the cost of prescription medications through private plans approved by Medicare. In 2026, a new annual out-of-pocket cap of $2,100 protects beneficiaries from catastrophic drug costs.

Original Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage

One of the most important decisions you will make is choosing between Original Medicare (Parts A and B) and a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C). Each path has advantages depending on your healthcare needs, preferred doctors, prescription medications, and budget.

Medigap: Filling the Gaps in Original Medicare

If you choose Original Medicare, a Medigap (Medicare Supplement) policy can help cover out-of-pocket costs such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. Medigap plans are standardized by letter (A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, N) and must offer the same basic benefits regardless of the insurance company selling them.

Federal law gives Medigap buyers a one-time 6-month open enrollment period, and starting January 1, 2027, New Mexico's Senate Bill 21 adds a yearly birthday-month window for policyholders 65+ to switch to a plan of equal or lesser value. Learn more about Medigap in New Mexico.
