Snowbirds & Medicare

If you split time between New Mexico and another state, Original Medicare with a Medigap plan gives you the most flexibility—coverage works in any state. Medicare Advantage HMO plans are typically too restrictive for snowbirds.

New Mexico's mild winters, affordable cost of living, and stunning landscapes attract thousands of seasonal residents—"snowbirds"—who split their time between New Mexico and another state. Whether you winter in Las Cruces, retire to Santa Fe, or spend half the year in Albuquerque, understanding how your Medicare coverage works across state lines is essential.

How Medicare Plans Work Across State Lines

Original Medicare (Parts A & B)

Original Medicare works the same in every state. You can see any Medicare-accepting doctor or hospital anywhere in the United States. If you split time between New Mexico and another state, Original Medicare provides seamless nationwide coverage with no network restrictions.

Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage plans use provider networks, and this is where snowbirds need to pay attention:

  • HMO plans: Generally only cover care from in-network providers in the plan's service area. Out-of-area care is typically limited to emergencies. Not ideal for snowbirds.
  • PPO plans: Cover both in-network and out-of-network providers nationwide. You pay more for out-of-network care, but you have coverage wherever you go. Better for snowbirds.
  • PFFS plans: May provide more flexibility for out-of-area care, but availability is limited.

Tip for snowbirds: If you spend significant time in two states, a PPO Medicare Advantage plan or Original Medicare with a Medigap supplement provides the most flexibility. HMO plans are generally not recommended for snowbirds.

Medigap Plans

Medigap plans supplement Original Medicare and work nationwide, just like Original Medicare. If you have Original Medicare plus a Medigap policy, you have full coverage in both New Mexico and your other state. This is often the best option for snowbirds who want zero hassle when traveling.

Part D Plans

Part D prescription drug plans have pharmacy networks. Make sure your plan includes pharmacies in both states, or choose a plan with a broad national pharmacy network (like major chains). Mail-order pharmacy options can also simplify getting your medications regardless of location.

Important Considerations

  • Primary residence: Your Medicare plan must be based on your primary residence. If you change your permanent address, you may need to switch plans.
  • Moving triggers a SEP: If you permanently relocate to New Mexico (or from NM to another state), you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period to choose new plans in your new service area.
  • Visitor vs. resident: If you maintain your primary residence in another state but winter in NM, your plans should be based on your primary state.
  • New Mexico's Medigap protections: If NM is your primary residence, you benefit from Senate Bill 21's birthday-month Medigap window, starting in 2027, if you already have a Medigap policy.

Planning a Snowbird Lifestyle?

A licensed Medicare agent can help you choose coverage that works in both your New Mexico home and your other state, ensuring you have access to care wherever you are.
